Top Apps for Fitness

In a recent discussion on our Facebook Fan Page, Beck was asking about apps for fitness. The following is a list of recommended apps for fitness for special needs children.

Beck wrote: Any good apps for the ADHD 4/5 yr old for exercise? We love the SuperStretch app that was featured. Any more like that? Exercise demos or video apps?

Super Stretch Yoga by The Adventures of Super Stretch, LLC

From iTunes:
"The scientific community is coming out with more and more research statistics on how yoga is helping children with issues like obesity, diabetes and asthma. And yoga has been proven beneficial in teaching positive cognitive skills for a variety of different special needs populations, from physical disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders. The physical practice of yoga provides a healthy outlet to calm the nervous system reducing stress and teaching kids how to relax.

The mindfulness and breathing aspects of yoga offer children skills for dealing with emotions giving them an ability to understand their feelings and relate to others. The balancing and standing postures help kids with sensory integration issues, which help to provide structure and discipline in their development. Yoga helps cultivate good character traits like trusting and respecting themselves and others."

Family Fitness by Salvijs Bilinskis

From iTunes:
"Family Fitness – simple, fun and professional:
• Based on physiotherapist’s professional experience
• Develop balance, coordination and stability
• Practiced on a daily basis in a real family environment
• Suitable for children and adults

Being fit doesn’t necessarily demand hours of sweating in the gym. Actually, we are using our major muscles (movers) in our everyday activities and in the most part of general workout routines. But we shouldn’t forget about the stabilizers (stabilizing muscles). Trained stabilizing muscles improve the balance, coordination and overall sense of well-being and strength. Family Fitness introduces set of basic exercises to train and develop the stabilizing muscles without any special equipment and really without leaving your home!"

:07 Minute Workout by Jeremy Karlson and Leigh Peterson

The 7 minute workout has been scientifically designed to "maximize results with minimal investment". It is a great workout for the whole family, as the robot is cute and engaging for the kids. Some exercises may need modification, so please consult your physiotherapist to customize for your child.

From iTunes:
"Hello squishy humans!

Are you a super important, busy, on-the-go type of person? Sure you are. You reek of importance. Do you like robots? Of course you like robots, everyone likes robots.

Speaking of robots, :07 Minute Workout has 'em. And if you don't know what the seven minute workout is, I recommend reading the article published in ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal. The circuits in this app are based directly on the recommendations made in that article.

But enough, talk, let's sweat! Or if you're a robot, leak oil!"

Cas has downloaded all of these apps and is thinking about incorporating each of them into her weekly exercise routine. Thinking about it. It's the thought that counts, right?
