Sosh by Dr. Mark Bowers

Unruly Red Lisa stated:  "It's for iPhone but I really like it. Lots of strategies, exercises. Definitely made for teens and adolescents - it's not cute or colorful but really useful. I like the voice meter. The full version is $39.99 but I think it's worth it."

"Sōsh™ focuses on five essential abilities for social skills development: Relate, Relax, Reason, Regulate, and Recognize. These "5R's" serve as a road map for individuals who want to be social, but may have faced obstacles in the past, and also serve as a guide for parents, teachers, and therapists hoping to encourage and assist individuals with their social goals.Sōsh™

CONTAINS OVER 60 WELL-DESIGNED SCREENS presenting exercises, strategies, and practical information to work through social situations in a step-by-step manner. And, most importantly, the app encourages you to work on these skills during everyday interactions, when learning is most likely to occur."

The Shredder by Dr. Mark Bowers

This app comes as part of Sosh, but it was so successful that it is now sold separately.

From iTunes:
"The Shredder is a fun and interactive way to reduce negative thinking, stress and anxiety. Developed by two psychologists, The Shredder app allows individuals to type in an unpleasant thought, feeling, or situation and drag it into the virtual shredder to hear and see it destroyed. There’s no need to take things out on others anymore! Simply shred it and forget it. Lots of fun for kids, teens, AND adults!"

QuickCues by Fraser

This app does have in-app purchases for the different modules.  The 5 modules are: Communication (included in the original purchase), Life Skills, Socialization, Coping, On The Job.  Each module is a $4.99 in-app purchase.  This app was recommended by readers on discussion questions.

From iTunes:
"QuickCues is a social script app that helps teens and young adults on the autism spectrum to handle new situations and learn new skills. Social scripts have been used successfully for years, but QuickCues makes these tools mobile and easy to use in everyday situations.

Communication: Provides help with conversations at school or work, listening, and talking on the telephone. It also gives tips on reading body language and finding shared interests with others ($4.99). **The QuickCues app includes the Communications module; all other modules can be purchased through the In App Purchase function.**

Life Skills: Promotes good habits to stay organized at school, maintain personal hygiene, and stay healthy through diet and exercise. This module helps break down routines, tasks, and assignments to provide the structure users need to be and feel successful ($4.99).

Socialization: Helps users create and maintain good relationships. This module suggests appropriate behaviors, such as taking turns, learning about the interests of others, and giving compliments. It also helps users put structure and limits on their own interests and activities ($4.99).

Coping: Provides users with strategies for good mental health. This module helps with emotional awareness and relaxation ($4.99).

On the Job: NEW!!! Helps users navigate the complex world of employment. It includes scripts for nurturing appropriate office conversation, addressing conflict, and successful interaction in team membership ($4.99)."

 SocialQuest by Smarty Ears

From iTunes:
"Social Quest is an application developed by author and Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Rosie Simms to improve pragmatic language comprehension and expression in a variety of social situations for older elementary, middle school, and high school-aged populations. Social Quest uses real life situations and contextual images to present the professional, parent and student with ‘’jumping off’ points for discussing the “why” and “how” of social language usage. The app utilizes a problem-solving quest theme in which students navigate various locations and earn “rewards” linked to social competencies.

Social Quest incorporates narratives about real-world situations in the home, school and community along with questions designed to increase positive social communication. The app is based on story-based intervention, a technique found to be effective for children with autism as documented in the National Autism Center’s Evidence-Based Practice and Autism in the Schools (2011)*. Questions about what to say, do, and infer in a wide variety of situations will target skills such as perspective-taking, conversational maintenance and transitions, gauging other people’s reactions, taking turns, problem solving, understanding humor, greetings, and scripts for social contexts. Situations and questions also address development of self-talk for social situations, a strategy that can reduce anxiety and improve communication skills (Sze & Wood, 2007)"

The Social Express by The Language Express

This app was recommended as good for the listed skills in the discussion question, but it is good for a younger group of kids.  It would not be a good app for a 13 year old.  Smart Apps for Kids gave this app 4 stars.  You can find their whole review by clicking here:  The Social Express Review

This app is available for iPad Only.
