Top Apps for Letter-Sound Correspondence For Teens

A recent discussion on our Facebook Fanpage discussed suitable apps for teens to develop a sound phonics base with a good letter-sound correspondence skill to help better reading skills.

Kerry wrote: My 16yr old intellectually disabled daughter can read, but has a weak grasp of phonics. I'm looking for apps for teens that will help her to learn letter-sound correspondence so that she can decode words instead of reading them according to their shape. We currently have an android tablet, but are hoping to get an iPad soon, so happy to hear about all options! Thanks!

Below is a list of apps recommended by our readers and staff, in no particular order.
** Please note: Some of these apps have in-app purchases, but they can easily be disabled in the settings of your device. There are also ads and social network links in some of these apps.

Only the app's developer can control when an app is free or not. All apps that we post as free are verified to be free at the time of this post. We make no guarantees otherwise.**

PBPhonics 1 to 3 by Cowirrie

From Liz:
"Supposed to be good for older kids."

From iTunes:
"PBPhonics provides adult learners of English with phonics practice. It is designed for people with little or no basic literacy, and does not rely on any spoken or written instructions. Older children and teenagers with literacy issues have also responded well to PBPhonics, particularly those on the autism spectrum.

PBPhonics 1 to 3 contains 18 phonemes in 3 sets. It shows how to build 293 words out of these phonemes, by sounding out the component phonemes and the complete word. A self-test of word recognition follows. The vocabulary offered increases as the student passes tests and gains confidence.

Multiple voices of different ages and genders speak each word to provide variety. PBPhonics grew up in Australia and has an accent to match.

While PBPhonics 1 to 3 provides a complete introduction to 18 phonemes, Cowirrie also make and sell PBPhonics 1 to 7. This app more than doubles the PBPhonics 1 to 3 vocabulary, to offer 42 phonemes and 636 words."

Zap Phonics Reading Games by Milk Drinking Cow

From iTunes:
Let child-friendly Zap guide your young one on a learning adventure that not only keeps him or her delighted and engaged, but gives you total peace of mind because you are providing the strongest foundation possible for your future reader.

This game teaches kids the sounds that letters make versus the names of the letters. Surprisingly, knowing the alphabet alone does not help a child learn to read - it just teaches memorization skills. It is only when your child associates each letter symbol with the correct sounds that he or she will be firmly on the path to becoming an independent reader, able to form an infinite number of words from the 26 letters.

Developed by a master educator, Zap Phonics is the only game that combines phonics with the gradient learning method that is geared towards toddlers and Pre-Kindergarteners and has been proven beneficial for older children too.
