Good Free Apps of the Day: Sight Word Flashcards - Fry and Dolch

Whether you teach Fry's Sight Word list or Dolch's Sight Word list, here are two free apps to help. They can be used as flashcards or even in a game mode, where the correct word has to be chosen out of a set of words.

If you would like to download Sight Words List (Free, iPad/iPhone) or Fry Words (Free, iPad/iPhone), please support Smart Apps for Special Needs by using our links:

External links to the Alligator Apps website and to iTunes to rate the app or see other apps by the developer.

These apps can be used as flashcards to learn the words or even to practice the words.  The word can be read immediately as it shows the word or wait for a tap.  I have students try to say the word themselves first, and then click to hear the word to see if they are correct.

There are different settings for practicing.  If you choose a game in the settings, it will give you the option of finding a word within two to six words.  Once you choose, you practice by doing just that.  It will say a word, and you will choose the correct one from the words listed on the screen.

Font color and size and the order that the words come can all be customized.  Customized word lists can even be made.

Sight Words, also known as the Dolch List are an integral part in learning how to read. The Dolch Word list contains 315 words that are broken down into appropriate age groups. It is important for young readers to be able to instantly recognize these high frequency words in order to be proficient and fluent readers.

From iTunes (Fry Words):
The Fry 1000 Instant Words are a list of the most common words used for teaching reading, writing, and spelling.

These high frequency words should be recognized instantly by readers.

Dr. Edward B. Fry's Instant Words (which are often referred to as the "Fry Words") are the most common words used in English ranked in order of frequency.

In 1996, Dr. Fry expanded on Dolch's sight word lists and research and published a book titled "Fry 1000 Instant Words." In his research, Dr. Fry found the following results:

25 words make up approximately 1/3 of all items published.
100 words comprise approximately 1/2 of all of the words found in publications.
300 words make up approximately 65% of all written material.

To make learning the Fry Words fun, simple, and easy, we have broken all 1,000 Fry words into unique sets of 10 words each.
