Part 3 - Lips, Tongue, Teeth and Jaw, Oh My!

We have a discussion on our Facebook Fan Page twice a day. This post is Part 3 of a discussion question that we received regarding apps specifically for a speech delay in conjunction with an intellectual delay. There are too many apps to just mention in one post so here is the continuation of that earlier post. You can click here to see the first two parts:  Part 1    Part 2

Amy asked: I would love if anyone knows of any good, free (if possible) apps for iPad for special needs children who have speech delay and an intellectual disability?

This post will discuss speech production and articulation of speech sounds. Speech production is the way that our lips, teeth, tongue and jaw move together to form the sounds and words that we produce.  Please consult your child's Speech-Language Pathologist to determine the apps that would benefit your child the most.

These are some of the articulation/speech production apps that I currently use:

SmallTalk Oral Motor Exercises by Lingraphica

This is designed for people with weak mouth, tongue and lip muscles and poor coordination. It contains videos that illustrate cheek, tongue, palate, lip and jaw exercises that help strengthen the oral musclature.

From itunes:
SmallTalk Oral Motor Exercises is easy to use and provides focused, effective rehabilitation. Because each exercise comes as an individual video, you can focus on just the exercises you need and repeat them as many times as you like.

SmallTalk Oral Motor Exercises was created by Lingraphica and authored by Elizabeth Begley, MA, CCC-SLP, and Mary Pitti, MS, CCC-SLP.

Articulation Station by Little Bee Speech

This app targets sounds in 6 activities. The /p/ sound program comes free and you can purchase the additional 21 sounds programs, as needed, from within the app. You can sort words by syllable length and create custom word lists. The app has the option to record and save audio and kids just LOVE this feature. They love listening to their own voice. This is a comprehensive speech app targeting speech sounds in a fun and engaging way.

From itunes:
"Created by a certified Speech-Language Pathologist, Articulation Station Pro is a full featured articulation application to help children as well as adults learn to speak and pronounce their sounds more clearly. Beautiful high quality images represent target words to be practiced in fun-filled activities with the assistance of a Speech-Language Pathologist, teacher or parent.

With activities at the WORD, SENTENCE and STORY levels your kids will love practicing their sounds and forget they are actually "working" on their articulation.

Each of the 22 sound programs target sounds in the initial, medial and final positions of words, sentences and stories. The majority of sounds (p,b,m,d,n,t,k,g,f,v,ch,j,z,sh,th) have 60 target words each. The l,r and s sound programs target blends as well. Additionally the r sound program has ALL OF THE VOCALIC R's!"

Starting Sound by I Can Do Apps

From iTunes:
"Aliteration, repetition of the initial consonant sound, is a phonological awareness skill important for the development of reading, comprehension and spelling. This interactive teaching tool can be used by parents, teachers, therapist and individuals to further develop the ability to listen, identify and manipulate individual sounds crucial for learning"

This app helps with so many crucial pre-literacy skills that are responsible for later confident readers. In addition, I use this app for articulation practice to focus on the beginning sounds of words and to practice individual sounds.

These are only a few of the apps that I use in my speech therapy sessions. There are so many good apps out there, Please talk to your child's speech therapist to determine the best ones for your child. What do you guys think? What are some of your all time favorite apps to work on certain sounds?
