Featured App: News-O-Matic (Plus a $30 iTunes Giveaway!)
News-O-Matic, which got a 4.5 star review from our Emilie, is a free news app geared towards children that helps teach them to learn about the world around them by presenting news and current events to them in a child-appropriate fashion. Since our original review there have been multiple updates and improvements, with one of the more recent ones adding an awesome Read Aloud feature that allows the app to be used with students of every ability and makes it fully inclusive.

The app itself is free to download, but there are daily, weekly, and monthly subscriptions available through in-app purchases to insure that your kiddos can stay up to date. To download News-O-Matic (FREE, iPad/iPhone) use this link to love the Smart Apps for Kids.
External link to iTunes under the Educators' tab. In-app purchase to buy subscription. In-app purchases of $9.99 a year (normally $19.99), $1.99 a month or $.99 a week.
News-O-Matic opens with an attention-grabbing front page featuring five daily articles. Along with all of the other great features there is now a Read Along option, making it a more inclusive app for a broader range of children. There are also sections for games, news room, and information about the app.
Stories are written using child-appropriate vocabulary. Kids can click on words they don’t know and see the pronunciation and definition. With the Read Along option, kids can have the entire article read aloud to them. From within each article the reader can click and find out more about each component of the article, whether it be about the author or the location or other facts.
The games provided can only serve to help increase children’s interest in the news and current events, and the News Room provides a place for kids to ask questions about articles and to see the questions and answers submitted by other readers.
It’s never too early to get your kids in the habit of staying abreast of daily news, and News-O-Matic offers a kid-friendly way to do so.
