SIXTEEN free apps from WGBH, including PEEP, Between the Lions and Sparky!
Today I was planning on updating our Peep and the Big Wide World app list, when I realized that the developer, WGBH, has even more great free apps! I'm making them into one BIG list, with Peep and the Big Wide World, Between the Lions, Sparky the Dog and more! This list now has SIXTEEN great apps that are completely FREE! These apps are great for kids, completely free with no in-app purchases.
PEEP Which Fish?
Eight fish swim gently in a line. In this Which Fish app, kids must observe the pattern the fish form and select which fish, from a choice of three, to assign to the rightmost position. If they are correct, Quack will respond and a new set of fish will appear.
PEEP and the Big Wide World Paint Splat
Paint Splat offers kids the opportunity to experiment with mixing colors or match a color Chirp holds up a on a card. If the color orange, purple or green (which make up the secondary color group) is successfully created, Chirp offers some of the harder-to-mix tertiary colors.
PEEP and the Big Wide World Hide and Peep
Peep and his friends peek from their hiding places in the tool shed. Kids then tap the screen where they think each character is hiding. Since every good scientist needs a keen eye, this game helps kids practice the observation and memory skills integral to scientific habits of mind.
PEEP and the Big Wide World House Hunt
Get ready for the ultimate match-up! This House Hunt app, which features the lovable chick, Peep, puts a new twist on a basic matching game. Kids turn pairs of leaves by tapping them, not to find identical pictures, but to pair animals with their homes. Can you help Mole find his way home?
PEEP and the Big Wide World Sounds Like Fun!
Give Quack what he’s always dreamed of: a solo. In this Sounds Like Fun! app, which features, the musical stylings of Quack, Peep and Chirp, kids can explore music and the properties of sound. The Sounds Like Fun! interactive gizmo allows kids to mix and match sounds.
PEEP and the Big Wide World Trash Stash
In this app, one bird’s trash is another Raccoon’s treasure. Since Chirp is in a “sorting mood,” kids get to help Chirp make order of her world starting with Raccoon’s junk. Kids practice their categorization skills by sorting objects using increasingly sophisticated criteria.
PEEP and the Big Wide World Quack’s Apples
Get ready to make a splash! In this Quack’s Apples app, which features, the hilariously quirky duck, Quack, kids roll apples into the pond for his fish museum. Watch out for the rabbit holes! (Bunnies don't seem to share.) Kids can have as many tries as they need to perfect their route.
PEEP Round and Round
All plants and animals go through cycles, but the stages of each look very different. In this Round and Round app, kids choose a plant or animal from the landscape and find out how it changes and grows over time. The stages of the cycle are pictured in a circle, but some are missing!
PEEP Flower Power
It's springtime and the ground is covered with cherry blossoms! In this Flower Power app, Chirp and Quack have collected a pile of blossoms and need help sharing so that each has the same amount. Players drag the flowers to divide them into equal groups until Chirp and Quack have all the flowers and both are happy.
PEEP Fish Swish
In this Fish Swish app, kids help Quack count fish. Quack is underwater visiting his fish friends and giving them balloon rides. In order find out how many balloons he needs, kids have to tell him how many fish there are. The only problem is there's not much time to count them!
PEEP Where's Quack?
Quack hides, you seek! In this Where's Quack app, the hilariously quirky Quack hides in a number of different locations. In each location, different hiding places change the way Quack's voice sounds. Is he muffled, or maybe far away? Is he down a hole, or underwater?
Sparky's Match Game
Children are shown by Sparky the Fire Dog himself what a smoke alarm looks like. They will learn the sound a smoke alarm makes, and what to do when they hear that sound. The app, designed for children ages three to five, combines a fun matching game with learning about smoke alarms. T
Between the Lions: ABCD Watermelon
Sing along alphabet fun! In this ABCD Watermelon app, Leona sings the alphabet song, but keeps adding in silly words. It's your job to fill in the correct missing letters. It's a fun way to learn the alphabet song, and to learn to identify letters.
Between the Lions: Dub Cubs
Mix up the music with the Dub-Cubs! In this Dub Cubs app, kids help the cubs make funky rhythms with words that rhyme. Pick the words that you want to hear in the music. Then, listen to the words play back with the music. Don't forget to click the records to mix in your own beats!
iPhone, x2 iPad
The first iPhone app from Between the Lions, the Emmy award-winning literacy program on PBS Kids -- proven to help kids learn to read! Before kids learn to read, a lot of scaffolding has to happen. Monkey Match - created for pre-readers - provides a fun way to practice three important skills.
iPhone, x2 iPad
Celebrate poetry with an iPhone app! Now poetry lovers have a new way of experiencing great poems with a free app. POETRY EVERYWHERE is a collection of short poetry videos featuring contemporary poets reading their own works, introduced by Garrison Keillor. It’s pure poetry! With easy navigation, this app is a sure way to provide reflection and inspiration.
